Babies of COVID-19: The impact of being born during the pandemic

For new mom Angela Bachchan, it’s been a troubling few months.

The Toronto resident gave birth to her first child, baby girl Ruby, on March 29, 2022.

COVID-19 restrictions meant her husband could not accompany her on hospital visits before the birth, while at the same time the couple were terrified of catching the virus while the baby was still in the womb.

Bachchan, 33, said, “When I was pregnant I was worried about what would happen if I got it (COVID-19).”

Baby Ruby and thousands of others in Canada opened their eyes to the world of COVID-19, where mask-wearing, physical distancing and lockdowns have dominated much of everyday life.

“It would have been worse if it had happened at the beginning of (pandemic) and you weren’t allowed to go outside or anything,” Bachchan said.
