Enugu police arrest ATM card swapping fraudsters

Enugu State Police Command on Wednesday said it has arrested four Automated Teller Machine card-swapping fraudsters for duping a 63-year-old man of N495,000.

The suspects, who are three men and one woman between the ages of 18 and 36, were arrested at about 4.30 a.m. on May 6, 2023, by operatives serving at the State Command’s Hawk Tactical Squad in collaboration with Nigerian Air Force troops Was. Enugu in Emen behind Emenite.

In a statement on Wednesday the command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, named the suspects as Michael Sopuruchi, Osinchi Godwin, Moses Anyi and Chika Namoko, a mother of four.

“The suspects were arrested while fleeing their above-mentioned criminal hideout in Emen, Enugu, after they fraudulently stole the ATM card and personal identification number of a 63-year-old male victim while pretending to help him withdraw money Was .Commercial Bank ATM along Ogui Road, Enugu.

“Immediately after the switcheroo, the suspects used the card and PIN to withdraw a total of N495,000.00 from the victim’s account.”

The PPRO said the suspects confessed to the crime during interrogation and said they had committed several other criminal acts of ATM card swapping and fraud within the Enugu metropolis.

He said that four different ATMs including the victim’s ATM have been recovered from them.

He said the suspects were produced before the court on Tuesday and remanded at the Enugu Custodial Centre, while the trial magistrate adjourned the matter to June 7, 2023 for further hearing and ordered that the case file To be referred to the Attorney General for legal advice.
