‘Over the moon with joy’: Newmarket welcomes possibly first baby born in Canada to Ukrainian refugee

Meet Baby Volodin, Newmarket’s newest resident and possibly the first baby born to a Ukrainian refugee fleeing war after the Russian invasion of Canada.

Mom Tanya Volodin gave birth to a healthy baby boy on June 5 at 2:24 a.m. at Southlake Regional Health Center, tipping the scales at eight pounds, 10 ounces, according to resident Kelly Walmsley, whose family raised Volodin and her mom, Welcome Lena. Sopova in her house.

Walmsley said that Volodin and the as-yet-unknown baby are both healthy and doing well.


“We’re all so happy. We’re over the moon with happiness,” said Walmsley, who was present for the birth.

“She makes the cutest little grunting noise. She’s amazing. They’re both doing great.”

While the Ukrainian consulate has not responded to an investigation, Mayor John Taylor has said it is the first child born to a Ukrainian refugee in Canada.
